Biography
Who is Ozuna?
Early life and background
Juan Carlos Ozuna Rosado was born on May 13, 1992, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was primarily raised by his paternal grandmother in a three-bedroom apartment situated above a local business. His grandmother helped instill a strong Christian faith and taught him the value of hard work, emphasizing that everything in life requires sacrifice and sweat. His father, who worked as a dancer for Vico C, passed away when he was only three years old.
Growing up, he listened to traditional Latin music styles like salsa and bachata, which later influenced his own sound. He also enjoyed reggaeton music from artists such as Wisin y Yandel, Daddy Yankee, and Don Omar. At the age of twelve, he decided to pursue a career in music. An uncle, who served as a father figure to him, gifted him his first microphone. During his teenage years, he often rapped along to songs by various artists using that microphone.
Music career beginnings
He officially began his musical path in 2012 by releasing the song Imaginando. To gain experience, he worked at a local bar called El Corozal, where he held his first performances. In 2010, he moved to the Washington Heights area of New York City, hoping to find better opportunities. He learned how to produce and promote his own videos there, creating his first music video on a very small budget. After three years in New York, he returned to Puerto Rico with his family.
He later signed a contract with Golden Family Records in 2014 and started uploading tracks to YouTube. His breakthrough came when he focused on radio hits. Manager Vicente Saavedra noticed his music playing at a basketball game and chose to represent him. This partnership led to increased radio play and success across Latin America. His profile rose significantly in early 2016 following his appearance on the single La Ocasión alongside artists like De La Ghetto and Arcángel.
Major albums and achievements
His debut studio album, Odisea, was released in August 2017 after he signed an agreement with Sony Music Latin. The record stayed at the top of the Billboard Latin Albums chart for 46 weeks, marking a historical run for the artist. He followed this success with his second studio album, Aura, in 2018, which debuted at number seven on the US Billboard 200. He continued his momentum with the release of Nibiru in 2019 and ENOC in 2020.
Beyond his solo albums, he has achieved significant commercial success with collaborative tracks. His 2018 collaboration Taki Taki, which featured Selena Gomez, Cardi B, and DJ Snake, earned a quadruple platinum certification from the RIAA. By 2019, he held the record for the most videos with over one billion views on YouTube. His professional accolades include two Latin Grammy Awards, five Billboard Music Awards, and twelve Billboard Latin Music Awards.
Acting and other work
He has expanded his career into acting and performance work. He made his film debut in the movie Que León. Later, he appeared in F9, which is the ninth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise.
