Who is Pam Ferris?
Early life
Pam Ferris was born on May 11, 1948, in Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany. Her mother was Welsh and her father was an English policeman serving in the Royal Air Force. After returning to the United Kingdom, she spent her childhood in the Aberkenfig area near Bridgend in Wales. Her mother worked in the family bakery business.
In her younger years, Pam performed at the Mercury Theatre in Auckland and later joined various regional theatre companies across the United Kingdom. She gained early television experience appearing in dramas such as Meantime, Connie, and Hardwicke House before securing larger television roles.
Television and film career
Pam played Ma Larkin in the ITV series The Darling Buds of May from 1991 to 1993. She later starred as Laura Thyme in the television detective series Rosemary & Thyme from 2003 to 2006 alongside Felicity Kendal. From 2012 to 2016, she portrayed Sister Evangelina in the BBC period drama series Call the Midwife.
On the big screen, Pam portrayed the strict school headmistress Miss Agatha Trunchbull in the 1996 film adaptation of Matilda. She also played Marge Dursley in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004 and appeared as Mrs. Bevan in Nativity! In 2009.
Theatre and awards
Pam has performed in numerous stage productions for both the Royal Court Theatre and the National Theatre in London. In 2007, she appeared as Phoebe Rice in a revival of John Osborne's play The Entertainer at The Old Vic in London. Her performance in this role earned her a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role.
She also received three nominations for Most Popular Actress at the National Television Awards for her work playing Peggy Snow in the television series Where the Heart Is.
