Biography
Who is Patrizia Reggiani?
Early life and marriage
Patrizia Martinelli was born in Vignola in Northern Italy. Her mother married entrepreneur Ferdinando Reggiani when she was twelve years old, and he later adopted her. At a party in nineteen seventy, she met Maurizio Gucci, who was an heir to the fashion house. The couple married on October twenty eighth, nineteen seventy two, and moved to New York City.
Rodolfo Gucci initially opposed the union because he believed Patrizia only cared about money. Despite this, he provided them with a luxury penthouse in Olympic Tower. Patrizia became active in local social circles and befriended Jackie Kennedy Onassis. During the marriage, she gave birth to two daughters named Alessandra and Allegra.
Divorce and the murder of Maurizio Gucci
The family moved back to Milan in nineteen eighty two. Maurizio left Patrizia in nineteen eighty five, stating he was going on a business trip and would not return. She divorced him in nineteen ninety four, and he agreed to pay a large annual alimony. Patrizia was ordered to stop using the Gucci surname but continued to do so anyway.
On March twenty seventh, nineteen ninety five, Maurizio Gucci was shot and killed by a hitman outside his office. Patrizia wrote a single Greek word in her diary on the day of the killing. She was arrested in nineteen ninety seven and accused of hiring the hitman due to jealousy, resentment, and a fear of losing alimony.
Trial and prison time
Patrizia stood trial amid intense media interest, with the press dubbing her the Black Widow. Prosecutors argued she wanted control over the estate and wanted to prevent her ex-husband from marrying Paola Franchi. In nineteen ninety seven, she was sentenced to twenty nine years in prison for arranging the killing. An appeals court in Milan later reduced the sentence to twenty six years.
She attempted suicide in two thousand using a bed sheet but guards found her. Her legal team later convinced the prison to allow her pet ferret to live with her. She became eligible for parole under a work release program in twenty eleven but refused because she had never worked. She was released in October twenty sixteen after serving eighteen years.
Documentary and film adaptation
Jovica Nonkovic released a documentary titled Lady Gucci La storia di Patrizia Reggiani in twenty twenty, featuring her perspective. The high profile case also inspired the feature film House of Gucci, released in twenty twenty one. Ridley Scott directed the movie, which starred Lady Gaga as Patrizia and Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci.
Patrizia praised the casting of Lady Gaga and noted that the actor looked like her. However, she expressed annoyance that Gaga did not meet her before accepting the role. Gaga stated in interviews that she chose not to meet Patrizia out of respect for the family and concern over how painful the events were for the daughters.
