Who is Paul Adelstein?
Early life and education
Paul Adelstein was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 29, 1969. He grew up in a Reform Jewish family and attended the progressive Francis W. Parker School during his youth.
Following high school, he enrolled at Bowdoin College. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude with a degree in English before pursuing professional acting.
Acting and screenwriting career
Paul Adelstein began his career in theatre by working with New Crime Productions, a company founded by John Cusack, and later with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. He made his film debut in the 1990 movie The Grifters and subsequently appeared in television programs such as Cupid, ER, Without a Trace, and Scrubs.
In 2005, he secured a major television role as government operative Paul Kellerman in the Fox suspense series Prison Break. After leaving that show in 2007, he joined the regular cast of the ABC medical drama Private Practice, portraying pediatrician Cooper Freedman for the entire six-season run through 2013.
His other television credits include recurring roles as Leo Bergen on Scandal and Jake Novak in Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce. As a screenwriter, he co-created the dark comedy series Imposters for Bravo, writing six episodes and appearing on the program as Shelly Cohen. His film work includes supporting parts in Intolerable Cruelty, Memoirs of a Geisha, Be Cool, The Menu, and Crime 101.
Music and personal life
Outside of acting, Paul Adelstein is the lead singer, guitarist, and pianist for a band named Doris, which formed during the late 1990s. He has recorded multiple albums with the group, contributing as both a vocalist and songwriter.
He relocated to Los Angeles in 2003 and became a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Browns football team. He married actress Liza Weil in November 2006 during a Reform Jewish ceremony. The couple welcomed a daughter in April 2010 before filing for divorce in March 2016.
