Poppy Montgomery Petal Emma Elizabeth Deveraux Donahue was born on June 15, 1972, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Her mother, Nicola, worked as an executive and market researcher, while her father, Phil Donahue, operated a restaurant. She grew up as one of six children in a large family where all the daughters received flower names.
During her youth, Poppy struggled with traditional schooling and attended six different private academies. She left school entirely at age fifteen to pursue stage acting and traveled to Bali with a partner. At age eighteen, she relocated to the United States, arriving in Florida before taking a bus across the country to Los Angeles.

Upon arriving in California, Poppy stayed with acquaintances and sent daily headshots to manager Bob McGowan until he signed her. Personal life and family
Poppy met actor Adam Kaufman in Mexico while filming an independent project, and the two later worked together again. They welcomed a son named Jackson Phillip in December 2007. The couple separated several years later.
She later met Shawn Sanford in Puerto Rico and gave birth to their daughter, Violet Grace, followed by a son named Gus Monroe. The couple married during a ceremony at Disneyland. Poppy holds citizenship in both Australia and the United States.
