Who is Rahul Bose?
Early life and education
Rahul Bose was born on July 27, 1967, to parents Rupen and Kumud Bose. His father is Bengali, while his mother has both Punjabi and Marathi heritage. His maternal grandfather was Lieutenant-General S. P. P. Thorat. Growing up, he developed an interest in sports after his mother introduced him to rugby union and boxing.
He attended the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai before studying at Sydenham College. During his time at college, he was a member of the rugby team and won a silver medal in a boxing competition at the Western India Championships. Following the death of his mother in 1987, he worked as a copywriter at Rediffusion and later became an advertising creative director.
Acting and film career
Rahul Bose began his professional acting path on the Mumbai stage in plays such as Topsy Turvey and Are There Tigers in the Congo?. His film debut came in the Hinglish movie English, August, where he played Agastya Sen. This performance earned him international recognition and helped the film become the first Indian production purchased by 20th Century Fox.
He has worked extensively in Bengali cinema with titles like Mr. And Mrs. Iyer, Kalpurush, Anuranan, Antaheen, Laptop, and The Japanese Wife. In the Hindi film industry, he appeared in movies including Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam, Jhankaar Beats, Kucch Luv Jaisaa, Dil Dhadakne Do, Chameli, and Shaurya. He also played a villain in the Tamil thriller Vishwaroopam.
Sports and social activism
Outside of entertainment, Rahul Bose is a well-known sports administrator. He has served as the president of Rugby India since 2021. His background in athletics includes playing cricket under the coaching of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and competing in rugby during his college years.
He is also an active social activist. He participated in relief operations following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. Also, he is the founder of The Foundation, which is an organization dedicated to fighting discrimination. His social conscience was reportedly strengthened by his experiences during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
