Who is Rakim?
Early life and background
Born William Michael Griffin Jr. In Wyandanch, New York, the artist grew up on Long Island. He is the nephew of R&B singer and actress Ruth Brown. As a teenager, he participated in high school football as a quarterback and initially aimed for a professional athletic career.
Music with Eric B.
The collaboration between Eric B. And Rakim began in 1985 and lasted until 1992. Their work is frequently cited as a major influence on contemporary music. The duo recorded four studio albums together: Paid in Full, Follow the Leader, Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em, and Don't Sweat the Technique. These releases helped define the hip-hop golden age and brought significant attention to internal and multisyllabic rhyming structures.
Solo career and development
After the partnership with Eric B. Ended, the artist transitioned into a solo career. He faced label issues following a reshuffling at MCA in 1994, which led to a period of inactivity. He eventually signed with Universal Records and released The 18th Letter in 1997. This album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and achieved gold status. He followed this with the 1999 release titled The Master.
Musical legacy and influence
The artist is widely credited with evolving hip-hop flows from simple patterns to more detailed arrangements. Before his emergence, many performers relied on improvisational styles, but he demonstrated the value of sitting down to craft detailed lyrics featuring clever metaphors. Figures such as Kool Moe Dee have described him as the inventor of modern flow.
