Early life and education
Rakul Preet Singh was born on October 10, 1990, in New Delhi, India, to a Punjabi Sikh family. Her father, Kulwinder Singh, served as an officer in the Indian Army, and her mother is Rajender Kaur. She has a younger brother named Aman Preet Singh, who also works as an actor.
She completed her schooling at the Army Public School located in Dhaula Kuan. Afterward, she attended the Jesus and Mary College under the University of Delhi, where she earned her degree in Mathematics.
Career beginnings and modelling
Rakul Preet Singh started her career in modelling at the age of eighteen while she was still in college, stating she initially joined the industry to earn extra pocket money. In 2009, she made her acting debut in the Kannada film Gilli, which is a remake of a Tamil film. She earned critical acclaim for her role before returning to complete her university degree.
In 2011, she competed in the Femina Miss India pageant. She won four distinct subtitles during the event, including Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face, Femina Miss Talented, Femina Miss Beautiful Smile, and Femina Miss Beautiful Eyes, alongside the People's Choice Miss Indiatimes award.
Breakthrough in South Indian cinema
Rakul Preet Singh returned to films in 2011 with Keratam and later appeared in Thadaiyara Thaakka and Puthagam. Her breakthrough came with the 2013 Telugu film Venkatadri Express, which became a commercial success and earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in Telugu. She followed this with roles in Loukyam and Pandaga Chesko.
Throughout 2016, she starred in several of the highest-grossing Telugu films of the year, including Nannaku Prematho, Dhruva, and Sarrainodu. Her performance in Nannaku Prematho earned her the SIIMA Award for Best Actress in Telugu. In 2017, she appeared in Jaya Janaki Nayaka and the bilingual action thriller Spyder.

Rakul Preet Singh expanded her career into Bollywood by starring in Divya Kumar's directorial debut Yaariyan in 2014. She later appeared in the romantic comedy De De Pyaar De in 2019 alongside Ajay Devgn and Tabu, and featured in the action drama Marjaavaan during the same year.
In subsequent years, she starred in Runway 34 and Doctor G in 2022, receiving positive reviews for her performance in the latter. Her later releases include the social family entertainer Chhatriwali on Zee5, the science fiction film Ayalaan, and the sequel De De Pyaar De 2.
