Early life and education
Rati Agnihotri was born in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, on December 10, 1960. She grew up in a Punjabi Brahmin family. Her formal education took place at Good Shepherd Convent in Chennai. Her extended family includes her cousin, actor and director Atul Agnihotri.
Career beginnings and major films
Rati started her professional career as a model at the age of ten. She entered the film industry with Tamil features like Puthiya Vaarpugal and Niram Maaratha Pookkal in 1979.
Her breakout role came in the 1981 Hindi film Ek Duuje Ke Liye, which was a remake of the Telugu movie Maro Charitra. This success led to several high-profile projects throughout the 1980s, including Coolie in 1983 and Tawaif in 1985. She received two Filmfare Award nominations for Best Actress for her work in these dramas. Other well-known 1980s credits include Farz Aur Kanoon, Aap Ke Saath, and Hukumat.
Acting break and professional return
After marrying architect Anil Virwani on 9 February 1985, Rati chose to leave the film industry. This decision coincided with the death of her father. She remained away from the screen for sixteen years, eventually returning to acting in 2001 with the Hindi film Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi and the Tamil movie Majunu.
Her film career expanded further with debuts in other languages, including Malayalam with Anyar in 2003, English with An Ode to Lost Love in 2003, and Bengali with Aaina-te in 2008. She also branched out into television, appearing in the 2005 serial Sixer, and performed on stage in the play Please Divorce Me Darling.

Rati Agnihotri is the mother of Tanuj Virwani, who works as an actor in Hindi films and television. Outside of her acting commitments, she spends considerable time in Poland. She maintains a business interest there, operating an Indian restaurant alongside her sister, Anita.
