Who is Wilfried Bony?
Early life and beginnings
Born in Bingerville, Côte d'Ivoire, he grew up playing street football from a young age. He spent time at the Maracanã Bingerville football school and participated in many interschool and city cups. Later, he joined the Cyril Domoraud Academy in his hometown for three years.
He began his professional career with the Ivorian team Issia Wazi, where he finished the 2007 season as the top goalscorer in the domestic league. Before his move to Europe, he also had a two-week trial at Liverpool in 2007, though he did not receive a contract offer at that time.
European club career
In 2007, he moved to the Czech Republic to join Sparta Prague. He played for their B team before moving to the first team, helping them secure the Czech First League title during the 2009–10 season. In 2011, he signed a contract with the Dutch club Vitesse. He had a very successful spell there, becoming the top scorer in the Eredivisie for the 2012–13 season with 31 goals. This performance earned him the Golden Shoe award for the best player in the Netherlands. His well-known goals during this period included a hat-trick against Heerenveen and multiple goals against clubs like Ajax and PSV.
Following his success in the Netherlands, Wilfried Bony joined Swansea City in July 2013 for a then-record transfer fee of £12 million. He scored 25 goals in his first season, including a vital goal against Manchester United in the FA Cup. By the end of 2014, he was the Premier League's top scorer for that calendar year. In January 2015, he moved to Manchester City in a deal worth up to £28 million. During his time at Manchester City, he scored in the Champions League against Sevilla and helped the team win the 2016 Football League Cup.
International performance
He made his debut for the Ivory Coast national team in 2010. He represented his country in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Also, he played in three separate Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He was a key member of the squad that achieved victory in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
