Who is Ray J?
Early life and real name
William Ray Norwood Jr. Was born on January 17, 1981, in McComb, Mississippi. His parents are Willie Norwood and Sonja Bates-Norwood. Early in his life, he moved with his family from McComb to Carson, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. He attended Carson High School during his youth.
Ray J began auditioning for television commercials at the age of eight in 1989. He played the foster son in The Sinbad Show from 1993 to 1994. Later, he played the role of Dorian D-Money on the UPN series Moesha from 1999 until the show ended in 2001.
Music career highlights
Ray J signed to Elektra Records in 1995 and recorded his debut album, Everything You Want, which was released in March 1997. The lead single, Let It Go, peaked within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Set It Off.
He later signed with Atlantic Records to release his second album, This Ain't a Game, in 2002. The album featured the single Wait a Minute, featuring Lil' Kim, and became his first record to enter the Billboard 200. His third album, Raydiation, was released in September 2005 and featured the single One Wish.
His fourth album, All I Feel, was released in April 2008 and peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200. It featured the single Sexy Can I, featuring Yung Berg, which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains his highest charting song.
Television and business ventures
In 2005, Ray J joined the cast of UPN's One on One, playing the character D-Mack for the final season. He also starred in his own VH1 reality dating show, For the Love of Ray J, which premiered on February 2, 2009.
In 2010, he premiered the VH1 reality series Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business along with his sister Brandy and his parents. In January 2017, he competed in the nineteenth season of the British reality television series Celebrity Big Brother. In his entrepreneurial career, he launched the technology company Raytroniks in 2016, as well as the Raycon line of direct-to-consumer earbuds in 2017.
