Biography
Who is Richard Schiff?
Early life and education
Born in Bethesda, Maryland, Richard Schiff grew up in a family with ties to the entertainment industry. His mother, Charlotte, worked as a producer on Broadway and television, while his father, Edward, was a real estate attorney. Before finding his path in acting, Richard held several blue-collar jobs in New York City. He cleaned bus wheels at a Greyhound terminal and worked laying cable for Manhattan Cable Television. These early experiences provided him with a practical perspective before he pursued higher education.
He attended the Bronx High School of Science but did not complete his studies there. Instead, he took night classes at Washington Irving High School while working to support himself. Eventually, he enrolled at the City College of New York, graduating in 1983. He also honed his craft by studying acting at the William Esper Studio. Although he initially focused on directing, he transitioned into performing in the mid-1980s.
Rise to fame and television work
Richard Schiff began his career directing off-Broadway productions, including a 1983 staging of Antigone. By the 1990s, he shifted his focus to screen acting, appearing in small roles in films like Speed and the thriller Se7en. His breakthrough occurred after Steven Spielberg saw him on the television drama High Incident, leading to a role in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. This exposure paved the way for his famous casting as Toby Ziegler on The West Wing, a role that earned him a Primetime Emmy Award.
Following his departure from The West Wing, he remained a consistent presence on television. He appeared in various series, including recurring roles on Ballers and the HBO series Entourage, where he played a version of himself. From 2017 to 2024, he portrayed Dr. Aaron Glassman on the medical drama The Good Doctor. His work extends to voice and performance capture, especially providing the performance for Odin in the 2022 video game God of War: Ragnarök.
