Rick Yune was born in Washington, District of Columbia, to parents of Korean descent. He grew up with his younger brother, who also pursued a career in acting.
He attended Our Lady of Good Counsel High School and St. John's College High School. Later, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, where he earned a degree in finance.
Career beginnings and modeling
While studying at Wharton, Rick Yune worked as an intern trading stocks on Wall Street. During this time, a modeling agent discovered him, leading to well-known fashion campaigns.
He became the first Asian-American model featured in advertisements for major brands like Versace and Ralph Lauren's Polo. He also changed the spelling of his last name from Yun for professional purposes.

Rick Yune made his film debut playing a war hero in the adaptation of Snow Falling on Cedars. He then appeared as a rival gang leader in the action film The Fast and the Furious.
