Biography
Who is Rino Sashihara?
Early idol years with AKB48
Rino Sashihara began her path in the entertainment industry in October 2007 when she was accepted as a fifth-generation trainee for the group AKB48. By August 2008, she earned a promotion to Team B and appeared on her first title track for the single titled Ogoe Diamond. During the early years of her career, Rino built a public persona around being a 'hetare,' a term used in Japan to describe someone who appears somewhat incompetent or like a loser. This relatability helped her grow a big fanbase through her blog and early television appearances.
In 2011, she became a member of the AKB48 subgroup known as Not Yet. This unit released several successful singles, further cementing her status in the music scene. Her popularity was evidenced by her blog performance in late 2010, where she attempted to post 100 articles in a single day. This stunt resulted in approximately 35 million page views within 24 hours. She eventually moved to Team A in 2010 after a long delay from the initial announcement of her transfer.
Success in the General Elections
Rino Sashihara is most famous for her unprecedented success in the AKB48 Group General Elections, an annual event where fans vote for their favorite members. She holds the record for winning this competition four times. Her first victory came in 2013, where she received over 150,000 votes to become the lead performer for the hit song Koi Suru Fortune Cookie. After a second-place finish in 2014, she secured three consecutive wins from 2015 to 2017. In her final winning year, she earned 246,376 votes, the highest total in the history of the event.
Her career underwent a major shift in 2012 following a report in a tabloid magazine regarding a past relationship. Although Rino denied the claims, she was transferred to the Fukuoka-based sister group HKT48. This move proved to be a turning point rather than a setback. She took on a leadership role as the theater manager of HKT48 in 2013 while remaining an active performer. Her ability to manage and perform simultaneously showed a unique business acumen that set her apart from other idols in the big franchise.
Music production and business ventures
After graduating from the idol life in 2019, she transitioned into a highly successful career as a music producer and entrepreneur. Rino founded the idol group =Love in 2017, which consists of voice actresses. She later expanded her production portfolio by launching sister groups ≠Me in 2019 and ≒Joy in 2022. Her work as a lyricist for these groups has been recognized by the industry, including winning a Lyrics Award at the 67th Japan Record Awards for the track Tokubechu, Shite.
Beyond the music world, she has established herself as a prominent business owner. She is a co-founder of the cosmetic line Ririmew and a brand of contact lenses called Topards. Rino Sashihara also served as the chairperson for the Tokyo Idol Festival between 2017 and 2021. Today, she is a frequent guest on Japanese variety programs, where she is known for her sharp wit as a pundit and television presenter.
