Early life and career beginnings
Rivaldo was born in Recife, Brazil, on April 19, 1972. He grew up experiencing poverty in the favelas of the city, which left physical marks from childhood malnourishment. Despite coaches believing he was too physically weak to succeed, he began his professional career at a young age.
He signed with Paulistano in 1989. Later, he played for Santa Cruz in 1991 and moved to Mogi Mirim in 1992. In 1993, he joined Corinthians on loan in the first division of Brazilian football before transferring to Palmeiras.
Rise to European success
In 1996, Rivaldo moved to Europe to play for the Spanish club Deportivo La Coruña. He scored 21 goals in 41 matches during his single season there, helping the team finish third in the league table. His strong performances led to a transfer to Barcelona in 1997.
During his five-year tenure at Barcelona, he scored 130 goals and won consecutive La Liga titles in 1998 and 1999, along with the Copa del Rey in 1998. He also scored a famous hat-trick against Valencia in June 2001, featuring a last-minute bicycle kick that secured a Champions League spot for the club.
Later club career and international achievements
After leaving Barcelona in 2002, Rivaldo signed with Italian club A.C. Milan. He won the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League during his time with Milan before cancelling his contract in late 2003. He later played for several other teams, including Cruzeiro, Olympiacos, AEK Athens, and São Paulo, before retiring from professional football.
At the international level, Rivaldo played 74 matches and scored 35 goals for Brazil between 1993 and 2003. He helped his country reach the final of the 1998 FIFA World Cup, won the 1999 Copa América, and starred alongside Ronaldo and Ronaldinho in the 2002 FIFA World Cup winning squad.
