Who is RM?
Early life and education
Kim Nam-joon was born in Seoul, South Korea, on September 12, 1994. His family relocated to Goyang during his early childhood years. As a student, he showed strong academic skills and wrote poetry, which earned him recognition and writing awards. During his youth, he also spent several months studying in New Zealand. He picked up conversational English by watching a popular American television sitcom alongside his mother.
His interest in hip-hop began around the fifth grade after he heard a track by Epik High. He later explored American rap music and started writing his own rhymes. During his middle school years, he joined local amateur hip-hop circles and began recording his own material using computer software. He eventually participated in underground music circles under an early moniker before joining a major entertainment label.
Joining BTS
In 2010, an underground rapper connected him with a producer at Big Hit Entertainment. The company founder offered him a trainee position at age sixteen, which he accepted without telling his parents. He trained for three years alongside fellow members who would eventually form the core of a major music group. During this training period, he contributed songwriting and vocals to tracks for other artists under the same label.
He officially debuted as part of the boy band BTS in June 2013, performing the intro track for their early release. From the beginning, he took an active role in writing and producing music for the group's albums. Over the years, the group achieved international acclaim and set numerous records on global music charts.
Solo career and projects
Aside from his work with the group, he pursued a solo music career. He released his first self-titled mixtape in 2015, addressing personal struggles and public criticism. His second mixtape followed in 2018 and achieved high placement on American music charts. In subsequent years, he collaborated with various international and domestic musicians across different genres.
He made his official solo studio album debut with the project Indigo, which featured guest appearances from multiple artists and reached high positions on major album charts. He later released a sophomore alternative music album that received positive reviews from critics and performed well internationally.
