Biography
Who is Rob Zombie?
Early life and real name
Robert Bartleh Cummings was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, on January 12, 1965. He was the eldest child of parents named Louise and Robert Cummings. Growing up, he developed a strong fascination for horror films and often admired figures like Bela Lugosi and Alice Cooper. As a child, he lived in a town that felt isolated to him, and he often viewed famous people as existing on a completely different planet.
His parents worked at a carnival during his youth. In 1977, when he was twelve years old, his family chose to leave the carnival abruptly after a riot broke out involving gambling tents. The event turned violent, with gunshots fired and people injured, which convinced his parents to seek a different line of work. He later graduated from Haverhill High School in 1983.
Formation of White Zombie
After graduation, he moved to New York City to attend the Parsons School of Design. There, he met Sean Yseult, who would become his bandmate and girlfriend. Before the band found commercial success, he worked as a production assistant for the television program Pee-wee's Playhouse. He eventually chose the stage name Rob Zombie, which he took from a 1932 horror film titled White Zombie.
Rob Zombie and Yseult co-founded the group that became known as White Zombie. The pair dated for seven years but continued working together after their relationship ended in 1991. The band released several extended plays and albums, including Soul-Crusher in 1987. Their breakout success arrived with the 1992 album La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One, which sold over two million copies.
Solo career and music success
In 1996, he legally changed his name to Rob Zombie. After White Zombie officially disbanded in 1998, he pursued a solo career. His debut album, Hellbilly Deluxe, was released in August 1998 and became a commercial success. It debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over three million copies in the United States. The album was heavily influenced by his love for classic horror cinema.
He continued releasing music throughout the following decades. Albums included The Sinister Urge in 2001, Educated Horses in 2006, and Hellbilly Deluxe 2 in 2010. He also released Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor in 2013 and The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser in 2016. His discography continued with The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy in 2021 and The Great Satan in 2026.
Directing horror films
Rob Zombie transitioned into filmmaking by directing House of 1000 Corpses, which was produced in 2000 but not released until 2003. He later expanded this story into a trilogy with The Devil's Rejects in 2005 and 3 from Hell in 2019. These projects established his reputation as a director within the horror genre.
He also directed a remake of the 1978 film Halloween in 2007, which became his highest-grossing film despite negative critical reviews. He followed this with a sequel, Halloween II, in 2009. His other directing credits include The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, The Lords of Salem, 31, and the 2022 film The Munsters.
