Who is Roberto Firmino?
Early life and background
Roberto Firmino was born in the Trapiche da Barra neighborhood of Maceió, Brazil. He grew up in a family with limited means near the Estadio Rei Pele. His father, Jose, worked as a street vendor while his mother worked as a housewife. He also grew up with a sister.
The young athlete began his football path by playing for his school team. This led to a trial with the local club CRB, where he joined the youth squad at age 13. During his early years at CRB, he often wore the number 5 shirt and occasionally played as a defender.
Club career and achievements
After his time at CRB, Roberto joined the Figueirense youth setup in 2008. He made his professional debut for Figueirense on 24 October 2009 against Ponte Preta. He scored his first goal for the club in May 2010 during a match against São Caetano, helping the team return to Série A.
In December 2010, he signed with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, eventually arriving in Germany in January 2011. During the 2013–14 Bundesliga season, he scored 16 goals in 33 matches and received the league's Breakthrough Player award. He played for the German side until his transfer to England.
Roberto Firmino joined Liverpool F.C. In July 2015 for a fee of up to £29 million. During his eight years in England, he won the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. He also secured the Premier League title and the FA Cup and EFL Cup during the 2021–22 season.
International career and recent moves
He made his first appearance for the Brazil men's national football team in November 2014. He represented his country at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and participated in the 2015, 2019, and 2021 Copa América tournaments. He was part of the squad that won the Copa América in 2019.
In 2023, he chose not to renew his contract with Liverpool. This led to a free transfer to the Saudi club Al Ahli FC. Later, he moved to Al Sadd Sports Club in the Qatar Stars League. While playing with Al-Ahli, he won the AFC Champions League Elite title.
