Early life and education
Rooney Mara was born on April 17, 1985, in Bedford, New York, a town located in Westchester County. Her mother is Kathleen McNulty Mara and her father is Chris Mara. She grew up with siblings named Kate, Daniel, and Conor. Her family background includes prominent ties to professional sports organizations, as her relatives founded the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After finishing her education at Fox Lane High School in 2003, she spent four months traveling in South America through an open learning program. She attended George Washington University for a year before transferring to New York University. She studied psychology, international social policy, and nonprofits at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, eventually graduating in 2010.
