Biography

Who is Salvatore Adamo?

Early life and background

Salvatore Adamo was born in Comiso, Sicily, Italy, on November 1, 1943. His father Antonio moved to Belgium in February 1947 to work as a colliery worker in Marcinelle. Four months later, his mother Concetta and Salvatore joined him in Ghlin before they moved to Jemappes. In 1956, Salvatore spent a year bedridden with meningitis. To keep him away from the mines, his parents sent him to a Catholic school run by the Frères des Ecoles Chrétiennes, where he showed a strong talent for music and the arts. By 1960, the family had seven children, including his younger sister Délizia.

Rise to fame and career highlights

Salvatore Adamo scored his first major hit in 1963 with the track Sans toi, ma mie from his debut album 63/64. This success led to a string of popular singles, including Tombe la neige in 1963, La nuit in 1964, Mes mains sur tes hanches in 1965, and Inch'Allah in 1967. By the latter half of the sixties, he ranked as the world's second best-selling musician, trailing only The Beatles. His self-penned song Petit bonheur sold over one million copies by April 1970 and earned a gold disc.

Later career and creative work

In the 1980s, Salvatore Adamo experienced a career slowdown as his musical style fell out of fashion. However, a nostalgia wave in the 1990s helped him resume composing, issuing records, and touring, starting with a run at the Casino de Paris in April 1990. He released the album Zanzibar in 2003 after collaborating with singer Arno. Despite facing health issues, including a heart bypass operation in 1984 and hospitalizations during later tours, he continued performing internationally in countries such as Spain, Portugal, Greece, Romania, Russia, and Japan.

King Albert II raised Salvatore Adamo into the Belgian nobility in 2001, granting him the life title of Ridder.
