Biography
Who is Sam Ryder?
Early life and real name
Sam Ryder Robinson was born on June 25, 1989, in Maldon, Essex. He grew up as the youngest child of his parents, Keith and Geraldine, alongside his two sisters. During his childhood in Chelmsford, Essex, he attended the local St John Payne Catholic School and delivered papers for a local newspaper.
His inspiration to pursue music began at the age of eleven after watching a concert by the Canadian rock band Sum 41. Later, a victory by the Finnish rock group Lordi motivated him to learn how to play the guitar. Before finding mainstream success, Sam worked in construction with his father, helped build Wembley Stadium, ran a vegan cafe, and performed as a wedding singer.
Musical beginnings
Sam began his professional music career at age sixteen by co-founding the band The Morning After. The group released two studio albums titled You Can't Hurt Steel and Legacy under an independent label before splitting up. Following this venture, he spent time contributing vocals and guitar work to other rock groups including Blessed by a Broken Heart and Close Your Eyes.
He travelled and recorded material with producers in different locations, including Nashville, Tennessee, though those early recordings were not released at the time. His persistence in the music industry eventually led him to look at solo avenues and connect with audiences through digital platforms.
How Sam became famous
Sam rose to widespread prominence in March 2020 by posting regular music covers on TikTok during the first lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. His vocal talent attracted the attention of established musicians such as Elton John, Alicia Keys, Sia, and Justin Bieber. His breakthrough moment arrived when he was selected to represent the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Performing his self-written track Space Man, Sam finished in second place with 466 points and won the jury vote. This achievement marked the highest scoring UK entry in decades and earned praise from critics and the public alike.
Album releases and accolades
Following his Eurovision success, Sam released his debut studio album titled There's Nothing but Space, Man! In December 2022. The record debuted at the top of the UK Albums Chart, making him the first British male solo artist to achieve a number one debut with a first full-length record in over three years.
He has continued to release well-known singles, including Mountain, Somebody, and You're Christmas to Me, alongside collaborating with prominent artists like David Guetta and Sigala. In early 2023, he received a nomination for Best New Artist at the Brit Awards, becoming the first Eurovision act to be recognized in that specific category.
