Who is Semih Şentürk?
Early life and start in football
Semih Şentürk was born in İzmir, Turkey. He began playing football in 1993 at Özçamdibispor, which was a local club in his hometown. In 1999, he moved to Fenerbahçe. He spent several years rising through the ranks of the youth section at the club.
Success at Fenerbahçe
Semih Şentürk remained at Fenerbahçe from 1999 until 2014. During his stay, he won five Süper Lig titles and two Turkish Cups. He also won two Süper Kupa titles. In 2007, the club named him vice-captain after Ümit Özat and Tuncay left.
He signed a contract extension in 2008 that lasted until May 2010. Another extension in 2011 kept him there until 2014. In the 2007-08 season, he scored 17 goals to become the league top scorer.
On August 6, 2008, he scored four goals against MTK Budapest. This made him the second Turkish player to score four goals in one European match.
International career and Euro 2008
Semih was selected for the national team by Fatih Terim. He played in UEFA Euro 2008 where Turkey reached the semi-finals. Against Switzerland, he entered as a substitute in the 46th minute and scored a header in the 57th minute.
In the quarter-final against Croatia, he scored a last-second equalizer. This led Turkey to win the game on penalties. In the semi-final against Germany, he scored in the 86th minute from a cross by Sabri Sarıoğlu.
Germany won the game in the 90th minute through Philipp Lahm. Turkey earned a bronze medal. Media and fans gave him the nickname Nöbetçi Golcü, which means Striker on Duty.
Later clubs and coaching
He departed Fenerbahçe on June 19, 2013. He joined Antalyaspor and scored his first goal for them on January 26, 2014. He also played for İstanbul Başakşehir and Eskişehirspor.
In November 2020, Semih Şentürk returned to Fenerbahçe to work as an academy coach. He held several positions within the academy before being promoted. In July 2023, he became the head coach of the U-19 team. He officially resigned from this role on September 18, 2024.
