Who is Sérgio Conceição?
Early life in Portugal
Sérgio Conceição was born in Coimbra, Portugal. He grew up in Ribeira de Frades and spent his childhood as a supporter of Sporting CP. His father worked as a bricklayer and his mother was a homemaker.
His teenage years involved significant personal loss. His father passed away in a motorbike accident the same day Sérgio joined the Porto academy. Two years later, his mother died, followed by the death of his younger brother.
Professional playing career
Sérgio began his professional path with loan spells at Penafiel and Leça before playing for Felgueiras. He later returned to Porto, where he helped the club secure national championships and a Taça de Portugal title.
His career moved to Italy, where he played for several clubs including SS Lazio, Parma Calcio 1913, and Inter Milan. While at Lazio, he won the Supercoppa Italiana, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, the Scudetto, and the UEFA Super Cup.
He also played for Standard Liège in Belgium, earning the Belgian Golden Shoe award. Later, he moved to Greece to play for PAOK and spent time with Qadsia SC in Kuwait.
International career highlights
Sérgio represented the Portugal national team 56 times and scored 12 goals. He participated in the Euro 2000 tournament, where the team reached the semi-finals. During a match against Germany, he scored a hat-trick.
He also played in the 2002 World Cup after helping his country qualify. His international debut occurred on 9 November 1996 during a match against Ukraine.
Managerial career and achievements
After retiring from playing in 2009, he transitioned into coaching. He managed Olhanense in the Primeira Liga and later coached Académica, his hometown club. He also held a position at Braga.
Sérgio Conceição achieved significant success as the manager of FC Porto. He holds the record for the most games managed at the club and won 11 honours, including three league titles. His tenure included winning the double in the 2019–20 and 2021–22 seasons.
In December 2024, he joined AC Milan following his departure from Porto in June 2024.
