Early life and family
Siti Nurhaliza was born on January 11, 1979, in Kampung Awah, Malaysia. She grew up in a musically inclined family as the fourth child among seven siblings born to Siti Salmah Bachik and Tarudin Ismail. Her mother was a traditional singer, and her maternal grandfather played the violin.
During her childhood, she helped her family sell homemade kuih to earn money. She attended local schools in Pahang and participated in various school activities. Her early exposure to music came from family events and traditional songs learned from her mother.
Rise to fame
Her professional music career began after she won the Bintang HMI singing competition in 1995 at the age of sixteen. Suria Records signed her, and she released her debut single, Jerat Percintaan, which won the eleventh Anugerah Juara Lagu. The track was featured on her self-titled debut studio album in 1996, which sold over 800,000 copies in Malaysia.
She followed this success with her sophomore album in 1997, which achieved multi-platinum certification. Her popularity soon spread to neighboring countries like Indonesia, where she held large-scale concerts and gained a dedicated following.
Career highlights and achievements
Siti Nurhaliza performed during the closing ceremony of the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in front of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. In 2004, she drew a big crowd of around 70,000 people to her concert at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. She also became the first Southeast Asian singer to perform a solo concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2005.
Throughout her career, she has received numerous accolades, including dozens of Anugerah Industri Muzik and Anugerah Bintang Popular awards. She has sold millions of records and remains one of the best-selling recording artists in Malaysian history.

Siti Nurhaliza married Khalid Mohamad Jiwa. She established her own management company, Siti Nurhaliza Productions, in 1998 to oversee her professional activities. Despite receiving good academic results, she chose not to pursue tertiary education in order to focus entirely on her music career.
