Sonam Kapoor was born in Chembur, India, on June 9, 1985. Her parents are actor Anil Kapoor and former model Sunita Kapoor. She grew up with two siblings, Rhea and Harshvardhan. Her extended family includes several other actors and filmmakers within the Indian film industry.
As a child, she attended Arya Vidya Mandir in Juhu and later studied at the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore. She also pursued correspondence courses through the University of Mumbai. Before beginning her acting career, she worked as an assistant director on the 2005 film Black.
