Biography
Who is Susanna Hoffs?
Early life and education
Susanna Lee Hoffs grew up in Los Angeles, California, within a creative and intellectual household. Her mother, Tamar Ruth, worked as a director and producer, while her father, Joshua Allen Hoffs, was a psychoanalyst. During her youth, she took ballet lessons and began studying guitar chords with guidance from her uncle. She attended Palisades High School before enrolling at the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1980, she earned a bachelor's degree in art. While at university, she explored various subjects, including film and theater. Her professional acting debut occurred in the 1978 film Stony Island, where she appeared alongside Dennis Franz and Rae Dawn Chong. Inspired by a Patti Smith performance and the final Sex Pistols concert, she became determined to pursue a music career.
Formation of The Bangles
After finishing college, the musician sought bandmates by placing advertisements in a local newspaper and leaving flyers in a nightclub. In December 1980, she connected with sisters Debbi and Vicki Peterson. The trio began practicing in her parents' garage. Originally named The Colours, they briefly performed as The Supersonic Bangs before shortening their name to The Bangs. Annette Zilinskas later joined as their bass player.
Influenced by 1960s pop groups like The Beatles and The Beach Boys, the group eventually settled on the name The Bangles in 1982. Their debut full-length record, All Over the Place, arrived in 1984. Although it received critical praise, the project did not generate high sales volume. The music video for "Walk Like an Egyptian" featured a well-known close-up where the singer shifted her eyes side to side. She explained that this movement was a reaction to stage fright, as she was looking at crowd members to stay calm. The resulting visual became a defining moment for the music video.
Commercial success and solo projects
Success followed with the 1986 album Different Light, which achieved triple-platinum certification. This release featured Prince's song "Manic Monday" and the hit "Walk Like an Egyptian." The group later released the album Everything, which included the chart-topping track "Eternal Flame." Following internal tensions, the band separated in 1989 but later reunited in 1999.
Susanna Hoffs also collaborated with Mike Myers on the fictional band Ming Tea and produced several cover albums with Matthew Sweet. Outside of the group, the singer released solo records such as When You're a Boy and Someday. In 2023, she published her first novel, a romantic comedy titled This Bird Has Flown. Universal Pictures acquired the rights to adapt the book for the screen.
