Who is Taeyang?
Early life and music beginnings
Born Dong Young-bae in Uijeongbu, South Korea, he first developed an interest in music by playing the piano. During his childhood, he enjoyed listening to classical pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert. His family faced financial difficulties, which motivated him to seek employment at a young age to assist with household expenses. While in the sixth grade, he successfully auditioned for a role in the music video for the song A-yo by Jinusean. This experience introduced him to hip hop culture, sparking a deep fascination with the genre.
Formation of BigBang
The label originally planned for him to debut alongside fellow trainee Kwon Ji-yong as a hip hop duo. This project was eventually cancelled, and instead, the record label incorporated them into a larger group with four other trainees. The final group, named BigBang, consisted of five members after a television-documented lineup change. He initially felt uncertain about performing as part of a band but grew comfortable with the other members over time. He selected the stage name Taeyang, which translates to sun, because he wanted to be the brightest star in the universe.
Solo career and studio albums
Taeyang released his debut extended play, Hot, in May 2008. The project shifted away from the hip hop style of BigBang, focusing instead on R&B music. He worked with a production team including Teddy Park and Kush to create the record. The EP earned him Best R&B and Soul Album at the 6th Korean Music Awards. Following this, he released his first full-length studio album, Solar, in 2010. This album peaked at the top of the Gaon Album Chart and featured singles such as I Need a Girl and I'll Be There. He contributed to the production of Solar by co-writing and composing several tracks.
Personal life and education
Taeyang pursued higher education at both Daejin University and Chung-Ang University. Regarding his family life, he has one sibling, a brother named Dong Hyun-bae. In his personal life, he is married to the actress Min Hyo-rin. Throughout his career, he has maintained a dedicated approach to his craft, often participating directly in the songwriting and production processes for his solo albums to ensure his personal thoughts and ideas are reflected in his music.
