Talia Shire was born Talia Rose Coppola on April 25, 1946. Her birthplace is the Woodside neighborhood of Queens in New York City. She is the only daughter of Carmine Coppola, a composer and arranger, and Italia Coppola. Her family later moved to Lake Success on Long Island, where she attended William A. Shine Great Neck South High School.
Her family background includes several well-known figures in the arts. Her brother is the director and producer Francis Ford Coppola. Another brother is the academic August Coppola. She is also the aunt of actor Nicolas Cage and filmmaker Sofia Coppola, and the niece of conductor Anton Coppola. Her maternal grandfather was the Italian composer Francesco Pennino.

Talia Shire gained significant fame in the 1970s for two famous film roles. She portrayed Connie Corleone in The Godfather, released in 1972, and continued the role in its sequels. Her performance in The Godfather Part II earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
She also played Adrian Pennino, the romantic interest of the title character, in the 1976 film Rocky. This performance earned her multiple honors, including the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress and the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress.
