Who is Tate McRae?
Early life and background
Tate Rosner McRae was born in Calgary, Alberta, on July 1, 2003. Her mother, Tanja Rosner, worked as a dance instructor, while her father, Todd McRae, was a lawyer for oil and gas companies. When Tate was two years old, her family moved to Oman due to her father's career. She lived in that country for three years and attended The American International School Muscat.
The family returned to Calgary when Tate was eight years old. She began recreational dance training at age six and later pursued intensive instruction. She competed with Drewitz Dance Productions and trained in various dance styles at the YYC Dance Project, a company owned by her mother. She also attended the School of Alberta Ballet. Tate McRae completed her high school education at Western Canada High School, graduating online in 2021.
Dance career beginnings
Before her music career took off, Tate was a competitive dancer. In 2013, she received the Mini Best Female Dancer award at The Dance Awards in New York City. She later became a brand ambassador for Capezio, a manufacturer of dance shoes. She also provided the voice for the character Spot Splatter Splash in the Lalaloopsy franchise between 2013 and 2015.
In 2015, she won a silver medal as a soloist and a bronze medal for her duet at the Youth America Grand Prix, earning a scholarship at the Berlin State Ballet. She was named Best Female Dancer at the 2015 Dance Awards in the Junior category. In 2016, she performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and appeared at a Justin Bieber concert in Calgary.
Music career and international success
Tate started her music career by uploading original songs to her YouTube channel in 2017. Her debut track One Day gained significant attention, leading her to release it independently. She signed with RCA Records in 2019 and released her debut EP, All the Things I Never Said, in early 2020. This was followed by a sold-out tour across North America and Europe.
Her song You Broke Me First, released in 2020, became a global hit and her first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100. It remained on that chart for 38 weeks. Following this success, she released her debut album I Used to Think I Could Fly in 2022. Her second album, Think Later, came out in 2023 and featured the number-one single Greedy.
