His career with the agency began in December 2013 when he was introduced as a member of SM Rookies, a pre-debut training team. During 2014, he appeared on the program Exo 90:2014 and performed dance covers of songs from the 1990s. In 2015, he participated in a charity basketball game alongside other label trainees.
He officially debuted in April 2016 as a member of the unit NCT U. The group released their debut digital single, The 7th Sense, which marked the first release for the entire NCT collective.
