Who is Thomas Sanders?
Early life and education
Thomas Sanders was born in Gainesville, Florida, where he grew up alongside three brothers. His father worked as a teacher while his mother was a dancer, and his family background included a great-grandmother who performed as a Ziegfeld Follies girl. During his school years at Kanapaha Middle School, Thomas participated in the school choir and theater club. He continued acting in musical plays while attending Buchholz High School.
Following high school, Thomas attended the University of Florida while concurrently performing in community theater productions. He earned a bachelor degree in chemical engineering in 2011. After graduating, he spent time working as a manufacturing engineer at a pharmaceutical development company in Alachua while continuing to perform in local theater during his free time.
Rise to fame on Vine
Thomas made his debut on the short-form video platform Vine in April 2013 under the handle Foster Dawg, named after his first dog. He achieved viral success after posting an impression of Stewie Griffin from Family Guy recorded in a drive-thru. He subsequently rebranded his channel using his own name and reached one million followers by October 2013.
His most popular series on the platform was titled Narrating Peoples Lives or Storytime, in which he approached random strangers to comically narrate their everyday activities. Other popular recurring segments included Disney Pranks with Friends and Pokémon Pranks. By the time Vine was shut down by Twitter in January 2017, Thomas had accumulated over eight million followers and earned two Shorty Awards for his content.
YouTube and Sanders Sides
Following the closure of Vine, Thomas shifted his primary focus toward YouTube and other social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. He used his main YouTube channel to release longer comedic sketches, music videos, and scripted series. In October 2016, he launched his flagship web series titled Sanders Sides, which he co-wrote and produced. The show features physical mental projections of his own mind representing different aspects of his personality.
The web series explores personal and existential issues through interaction with four main characters named Patton, Roman, Logan, and Virgil. The show grew out of character archetypes that Thomas originally developed during his time on Vine. In addition to his online video work, he has published music singles and starred in theatrical stage productions, including a tour of his own musical Ultimate Storytime.
