Early life and background
Tila Tequila was born as Nguyễn Thị Thiên Thanh in Singapore. Her family were Vietnamese refugees who arrived after the Vietnam War. She moved to a neighborhood in Houston, Texas, when she was one year old. She grew up within a gated community managed by a Buddhist temple until she was eight years old. Her adolescence involved various challenges, including time spent in a reform school for six months during her teenage years.
As a teenager, she developed an interest in writing poetry to express her emotions. At age 16, she ran away to Queens, New York City, for several months. She also experienced a drive-by shooting while living in Houston. She attended Alief Hastings High School and graduated in 2000. She later moved to California in 2001 to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
Rise to internet fame
Before her television success, Tila gained big popularity as an early internet influencer. She joined Myspace in the fall of 2003 after experiencing difficulties with other social platforms.
