Early life and education
Timothy Simon Roth was born in Dulwich, United Kingdom, on May 14, 1961. His mother worked as a painter and teacher, while his father was a Fleet Street journalist and painter. Growing up, Tim Roth attended several schools in England, including Lambeth, Croydon Technical School, and the Strand School.
Before pursuing acting professionally, Tim studied sculpture at London's Camberwell College of Arts. He developed an interest in the arts early on, which later guided his path into theater, television, and film production.
Career highlights and films
Tim gained early television attention in productions like Made in Britain and Meantime. He made his theatrical film debut in The Hit, earning a nomination for a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, he appeared in films such as The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover and Vincent & Theo.
International recognition followed when Tim collaborated with director Quentin Tarantino. He starred in Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Four Rooms, and later The Hateful Eight. For his performance as Archibald Cunningham in Rob Roy, Tim won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and received Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations in the same category.
Tim expanded his career by directing the film The War Zone. On television, he played Cal Lightman in Lie to Me and starred in the series Tin Star. He also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Emil Blonsky and Abomination in productions including The Incredible Hulk, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Family and personal life
Tim married Nikki Butler in 1993, and the couple resides in Pasadena. They had two sons together, named Timothy Hunter and Michael Cormac. Tim also has another son, Jack, born in 1984. In October 2022, his son Cormac passed away from cancer at age twenty five.
