Who is Trevor Jacob?
Early life and athletic career
Trevor Jacob grew up in West Hills, United States, and later lived in Mammoth Lakes, California. He established himself as an extreme sports athlete, participating in skateboarding, surfing, BMX riding, motocross, and mixed martial arts. He was also a member of Travis Pastrana's Nitro Circus collective.
In snowboarding, Trevor competed in the snowboard cross discipline. He represented the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Russia, where he reached the semifinals and finished in ninth place. He also competed at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado, during 2014, 2015, and 2016, achieving a best finish of fifth place in the latter year. Also, he won the Snowboard Cross event at the FIS Snowboard World Cup on January 11, 2014.
YouTube career and aviation
Trevor produced content for his YouTube channel, focusing primarily on skydiving, aviation, and snowboarding. By January 2022, his channel had surpassed 100,000 subscribers. He owned a 1940 vintage single-engine light aircraft, a Taylorcraft BL-65 registered as N29508.
On November 24, 2021, Trevor took off alone from Lompoc Airport in the aircraft. During the flight, he parachuted out of the plane while wearing a bulky skydiving parachute and carrying a selfie stick. The unoccupied aircraft crashed into unpopulated scrubland in the Los Padres National Forest near New Cuyama, causing substantial damage.
Investigations and legal consequences
A month after the incident, Trevor released a video on YouTube titled I Crashed My Plane, which depicted the flight and his subsequent parachute jump. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board launched investigations into the crash. Investigators found that Trevor had not attempted to contact air traffic control, restart the engine, or perform an emergency landing.
In April 2022, the Federal Aviation Administration revoked Trevor's private pilot certificate after concluding that he abandoned the aircraft solely to film the crash and dispose of the wreckage. Later, in May 2023, Trevor pleaded guilty to a felony charge of obstruction of justice for destroying and concealing wreckage to hinder a federal investigation. He admitted that he crashed the plane to gain notoriety and make money from a sponsor. In December 2023, a federal judge sentenced him to six months in prison.
