Biography
Who is Twiggy?
Early life and real name
Lesley Hornby was born on September 19, 1949, and raised in Neasden, which was originally in Middlesex and is now a suburb of north-west London. She was the third daughter of Nellie Lydia, a factory worker, and William Norman Hornby, a carpenter and joiner from Lancashire. Her mother taught her to sew from an early age, and she used these skills to make her own clothing while attending the Brondesbury and Kilburn High School.
How Twiggy became famous
In January 1966, at the age of sixteen, her hair was cut and colored short in London by Leonard of Mayfair, who was testing a new crop haircut. Photographer Barry Lategan took test head shots that were hung in the salon, where fashion journalist Deirdre McSharry saw the images. McSharry arranged further photographs and featured her in the Daily Express, declaring her The Face of 1966.
Her boyfriend at the time, Nigel Davies, managed her career and persuaded her to change her name to Twiggy, derived from her childhood nickname Twigs. She quickly rose to international fame, appearing on numerous magazine covers and modelling in France, Japan, and the United States before retiring from full-time modeling in 1970.
Career highlights
After leaving modeling behind, Twiggy successfully expanded into acting and singing. Her first leading role was in the musical comedy film The Boy Friend in 1971, which earned her two Golden Globe awards for Best Actress and New Star of the Year. She also released her self-titled debut album in 1976, which reached number thirty-three on the UK Albums Chart and included charting singles such as her cover of Rings.
She made her Broadway debut in the musical My One and Only in 1983, receiving a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. In later years, she published autobiographies like Twiggy in Black and White in 1998 and served as a judge on the television reality series America's Next Top Model between 2005 and 2007.
Family and relationships
Twiggy has been married twice during her life. Her first marriage was to Michael Witney, and she later married Leigh Lawson. Her personal life and career developments have frequently intersected with her public profile in the entertainment and fashion industries across the decades.

During her modeling heyday, Twiggy stood at a height of 168 centimeters. Her distinctive look centered on her thin build, androgynous appearance, big eyes, long eyelashes, and short hair, which helped define the fashion aesthetic of the 1960s.
