Early life and background
Valeria Golino was born in Naples, Italy, to a scholar father and a painter mother. At age fourteen, she began working as a fashion model across major European and American cities.
Despite her early exposure to the arts through her mother, she initially wanted to pursue a career as a cardiologist rather than acting. Her entry into the film industry happened entirely by chance when her uncle received a call from director Lina Wertmüller. After a successful audition where she performed Shakespeare, she was cast in her very first feature film and decided to change her career path entirely.
