Who is Wayne Knight?
Early life and education
Wayne Knight Elliot Knight was born in Manhattan on August 7, 1955. His parents were Grace and William Knight. The family relocated to Cartersville, Georgia, where his father worked in the textile industry. Raised in the Catholic faith, Wayne attended local schools throughout his childhood.
During his high school years, he played on the football team as a lineman. He later enrolled at the University of Georgia to pursue his education. Although he left the institution to begin his professional acting career, he eventually returned to complete his degree in 2008.
Stage and early career
Wayne started his professional path with an internship at the Barter Theatre located in Abingdon, Virginia. This venue specialized in repertory productions. Upon finishing his internship, he joined the staff as an Equity actor. He eventually moved back to New York City.
After living there for two years, he secured his first Broadway role. Between his stage engagements, he especially worked as a private investigator for a period of five years.
Breakthrough roles
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the actor appeared in several films, including Dirty Dancing, Born on the Fourth of July, Dead Again, JFK, and Basic Instinct. His performance in Basic Instinct led director Steven Spielberg to cast him in the 1993 hit Jurassic Park. As Dennis Nedry, the chief programmer for InGen Corporation, he gained widespread recognition.
During the 1990s, he also became widely known on television. He played the mailman Newman, a neighbor and adversary to the main character, on the popular NBC sitcom Seinfeld. Concurrently, he portrayed Officer Don Orville on the NBC series 3rd Rock from the Sun. His television work also included appearances on sketch shows like The Edge and Assaulted Nuts.
Voice acting and later work
The performer has an extensive background in voice acting for animated projects. He provided the voice for Tantor the elephant in the 1999 Disney film Tarzan and Al McWhiggin in Toy Story 2. Other voice credits include Mr. Blik in Catscratch, Igor in Toonsylvania, and Dojo Kanojo Cho in Xiaolin Showdown. He also voiced characters for series such as Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and Tak and the Power of Juju.
Later film roles included parts in Space Jam, Rat Race, Punisher: War Zone, and She Wants Me. He also appeared in theatre productions like Elf: The Musical, where he played Santa, and the Broadway play Art.
Personal life
Wayne married makeup artist Paula Sutor in 1996. The ceremony occurred at the residence of his Seinfeld co-star Michael Richards. This marriage ended in divorce by December 2003. In 2006, he married his second wife, Clare de Chenu. The couple has one son named Liam.
The family resides in the Toluca Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, where the actor has lived for many years. Outside of his professional life, he has participated in political events, including the 2012 Democratic National Convention. He also appeared in a 2020 advertisement supporting the Democratic Party and addressing concerns regarding mail service workers.
