His mother, Caroline, worked as a school board administrator, while his father, Willard Carroll Smith Sr., served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a refrigeration engineer. Will grew up in the Wynnefield neighborhood of West Philadelphia and attended local schools including Overbrook High School.
