During his childhood, the future artist relocated frequently before spending significant time in Antioch, Tennessee, near Nashville. While attending school in the area, he experienced a cultural shift where hip hop music began to deeply connect with his personal perspective.
The performer later adopted his stage name based on a combination of influences. He explained that his father possessed Cherokee heritage, and he chose the word Yela alongside the English term wolf to symbolize a duality within his personality. This moniker reflected both an intellectual light side and a tougher survivalist dark side as he navigated his youth.
Beginnings in the music industry
In 2005, the musician appeared as a participant on a television program broadcast by the UPN network titled The Road to Stardom with Missy Elliott. Following his departure from that television program, he put out an independent debut full length project titled Creekwater during the same year. Shortly afterward, he delivered another initial release in the form of a promotional collection of tracks.
He subsequently secured a recording contract with Columbia Records and shared a single named Kickin from an unreleased project. After parting ways with that label, he distributed additional collections of music independently, including projects paying tribute to classic rock. He eventually aligned with Ghet-O-Vision Entertainment to share an extended play titled Arena Rap.
Breakthrough and major releases
Collaborating with a producer from his previous label, the rapper worked on a breakthrough collection of songs titled Trunk Muzik. Released early in 2010, this project generated substantial online attention and helped build a dedicated audience for his music. The success of those tracks led to a recording agreement with Interscope Records, which reissued the project for a broader audience under a combined label arrangement.
Seeking further growth in the industry, the performer entered a joint business venture with Eminem and his label Shady Records. Through this partnership, he delivered a studio album titled Radioactive, which secured a position on the Billboard album charts. He continued expanding his catalogue by issuing subsequent projects such as Love Story, which achieved strong chart placements and earned platinum certification from industry associations for associated singles.
Collaborative projects and later work
Throughout his career, the artist frequently partnered with other prominent musicians across different genres. He joined forces with British singer Ed Sheeran to record a short collaborative project titled The Slumdon Bridge, which was made available as a complimentary download. Around the same time, he issued material commemorating specific holidays, including a track produced by local collaborators to announce another official mixtape.
Additional collaborative efforts included a joint release with a well known rock drummer, featuring contributions from various guest vocalists and distributed through digital platforms. As his career progressed into later years, the singer transitioned toward independent distribution models for subsequent studio albums, maintaining his presence in the hip hop and alternative rap scenes through continuous recording sessions.
