Early life and family
Yıldız Tilbe was born in the Gültepe neighborhood of Konak, İzmir, into a family of Kurdish heritage. She was the youngest among six siblings born to parents named Altun and Ali. Her father worked as a seasonal laborer. During her childhood, her family referred to her by the nickname Yadigar.
She attended the Mustafa Rahmi Balaban School but stopped her formal education after completing the second grade. Despite leaving school early, she began singing at a young age. At eighteen, she married a man named Güngör Karahan. The marriage lasted five years and resulted in the birth of her daughter, Sezen Burçin.
Rise to stardom
After her divorce, she began working as a singer in various İzmir nightclubs. Her professional career took a significant turn in 1990 when she started performing at a club owned by Cengiz Özşeker. While working there in 1991, she met Sezen Aksu, who hired her as a backing vocalist. This opportunity led her to move to Istanbul to work alongside Aksu.
Eventually, she left that role to perform independently in Istanbul venues. A breakthrough occurred when she appeared as a soloist on the television program Laf Lafı Açıyor, hosted by Cem Özer. Following this television exposure, she released her debut studio album, Delikanlım, in 1994, which quickly became a major musical success in Turkey.
Musical career and songwriting

She has written many songs for other artists and frequently collaborated on various music projects. Yıldız Tilbe has stated that her songs aim to capture universal human stories rather than just her own experiences.
She faced a career interruption in 1996 when police discovered cannabis at her residence. Her career saw a major resurgence in 2001 with the release of the album Gülüm, followed by successful projects like Haberi Olsun in 2002 and Yürü Anca Gidersin in 2003.
Health and controversies
In 2004, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer and underwent surgery at the Hacettepe University Medical School. She later attributed the illness to personal turmoil she was experiencing at the time. She has been involved in several public controversies, including a 2009 disagreement on the İbo Show with presenter İbrahim Tatlıses, which resulted in her leaving the program after a heated exchange.
She has also faced legal and public criticism for various remarks. In 2012, she faced a trial after using offensive language toward a journalist during an interview.
