Early life and education
Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Yvan Attal grew up in the suburbs of Paris. He studied acting at the Cours Florent, a drama school located in France. These formative years helped him prepare for a professional career in the French film industry.
Acting and directing career
Yvan Attal made his acting debut in the 1989 film Un monde sans pitié, directed by Éric Rochant. His performance in this movie earned him a César Award for Most Promising Actor. He later moved into directing with his first feature film titled Ma femme est une actrice in 2001. This production featured his partner Charlotte Gainsbourg.
His career spans both sides of the camera. He appeared in international films including The Interpreter and Anthony Zimmer. In the Hollywood production Rush Hour 3, he played a French taxi driver named George. Also, he has worked as a dubbing actor in France. He voiced roles for Tom Cruise in films such as Eyes Wide Shut, Mission: Impossible 2, Vanilla Sky, and Minority Report. He also provided the voice for James McAvoy in the movie Penelope. Yvan Attal has been in a long-term relationship with the actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg. The couple met while working on the 1991 movie Aux yeux du monde. Although they are not married, he famously proposed to her during a ceremony where he received the French National Order of Merit in 2013. The couple has three children together named Ben, Alice, and Jo. Their son Ben Attal is also an actor and appeared in the 2021 film The Accusation. Following the passing of Kate Barry, who was the sister of Charlotte Gainsbourg, the family moved to New York City in 2014.
