Who is Yvonne Chaka Chaka?
Early life and background
Yvonne Chaka Chaka was born in Dobsonville, Soweto, in 1965. Her childhood was challenging due to the socio-political climate of apartheid South Africa. Her father was a musician who passed away when she was eleven years old, leaving her mother to raise three daughters while working as a domestic worker. Despite these difficult financial circumstances, she grew up with a deep love for music and often sang in church choirs.
As a young girl, she developed her performance style by using everyday household items as makeshift microphones.
