Biography
Who is Thandiswa Mazwai?
Early life and education
Thandiswa Mazwai was born in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa in 1976. She spent most of her upbringing in Soweto, Johannesburg, during a period marked by significant political unrest in the 1980s. Her parents, Belede and Thami Mazwai, worked as journalists and were active in anti-apartheid political movements. This upbringing exposed her to a household filled with literature, newspapers, and intense political debate, which she credits for shaping her worldview.
Later, she pursued studies in English Literature and International Relations at Wits University. The influence of her mother, who passed away when she was fifteen, along with writings by figures like Steve Biko, Frantz Fanon, and Chinua Achebe, deeply informed her artistic perspective.
Musical beginnings with Bongo Maffin
Before gaining widespread fame, Thandiswa was a member of the group Jack-Knife alongside Kimon Webster and Themba Smuts, where she participated in the early kwaito movement. She also participated in the Shell Road to Fame competition, though she did not reach the semi-finals. Solo music career
After releasing five albums with Bongo Maffin, she transitioned into a solo career. Her debut album, Zabalaza, arrived in 2004 and achieved double platinum status while winning four South African Music Awards. She followed this in 2009 with the album Ibokwe, which reached gold status shortly after its release. Her 2016 album, Belede, explored jazz and protest anthems from the 1950s and 1960s, reflecting her interest in South Africa's political history.
In 2024, she released her fourth studio album, Sankofa. Recorded in cities including Johannesburg, Dakar, and New York, the project combined archival Xhosa field recordings with jazz and West African musical styles. The album won four awards at the 31st South African Music Awards, including Best Female Artist of the Year.
