Biography
Who is Zazie?
Early life and real name
Isabelle Marie Anne de Truchis de Varennes was born on April 18, 1964, in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. Her mother worked as a music teacher, while her father, Hervé de Truchis de Varennes, practiced as an architect. Growing up, the household filled with classical music alongside recordings by artists like Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel and Barbara. Inspired by these sounds, Zazie started playing the violin at the age of ten. She later taught herself how to play both the piano and the guitar.
Following her high school education, Zazie began studying to become a psychotherapist. However, her striking appearance and nearly six-foot stature caught the attention of modelling agents. She ultimately decided to leave her schooling behind to pursue a career as a fashion model.
Musical career beginnings
In 1990, Zazie officially stepped into the music industry. She signed a record contract with Phonogram in 1991. By 1992, she released her debut album titled Je, tu, ils, which was recorded inside the studios of Peter Gabriel. She wrote almost all the tracks on the record and participated directly in their composition. The single Sucré salé achieved a ranking of number forty-six on the French SNEP Singles Chart.
The following year brought recognition when Zazie received the award for Best New Female Pop Artist of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique. This early recognition helped launch her career and secured her record label's backing for a second album. Through these early works, she established a reputation for crafting songs well-known for their wit, alliteration, homophonies and double entendres.
Albums and chart success
In 1995, Zazie released her second album, Zen, which she co-wrote and co-produced with Vincent-Marie Bouvot. The release featured popular singles such as Zen and Homme sweet homme. Her subsequent 1996 single Un point c'est toi sparked discussions on television due to its music video content. Another major milestone arrived in 2001 when she teamed up with Axel Bauer on the single À ma place. The track became her most successful single in France, climbing to number four on the French charts.
Over the following years, Zazie continued releasing albums and touring. Her 2001 release La Zizanie featured songs like Adam et Yves, Rue de la paix and Danse avec les loops. Later projects included Rodéo in 2004, Totem in 2007, Za7ie in 2010, Cyclo in 2013, and Encore heureux in 2015. In 2018, she released the single Speed and her tenth studio album, Essenciel, which achieved gold and platinum certifications in France for high sales numbers.
Television and other activities
Beyond her solo music career, Zazie expanded into film and television projects. She co-composed the music for the 1997 film Ma vie en rose and made her acting debut in the 1998 film J'aimerais pas crever un dimanche directed by Didier Le Pêcheur. In addition, she wrote and co-composed tracks for Christophe Willem's 2007 debut album, Inventaire.
Starting in 2015, Zazie took on a coaching role for the French version of The Voice. One of her team members, Lilian Renaud, won the fourth season of the show. She returned to coach during several subsequent seasons, including 2016, 2017, 2018, 2023 and 2024, as well as participating in the All Stars format in 2021.
