Early life and real name
AJ Michalka: Amanda Joy Michalka was born in Torrance, California, on April 10, 1991. She grew up with her older sister Aly and attended Mack Elementary during her childhood. Her mother was a musician who performed with a Christian rock group, and her father owned a contracting business.
As a young girl, she lived briefly in Seattle and Milwaukee. She started playing the piano at the age of six and picked up the guitar early in her life. She also began acting in church play productions when she was five years old and was homeschooled for part of her upbringing.
Career highlights
AJ started her career in entertainment during the 2000s working as a catalog model. In 2006, she made her Disney Channel debut alongside her sister in the original movie Cow Belles. She later appeared in several television shows and films, including the Peter Jackson movie The Lovely Bones.
From 2009 to 2013, she performed with her sister in the musical duo 78violet before changing the band name back to Aly and AJ in 2015. She also secured a recurring role as Lainey Lewis on the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs, later starring in the spinoff series Schooled.

In 2015, AJ began voicing the character Stevonnie in the animated series Steven Universe. She also provided the voice for the lead role of Catra in the Netflix animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
In 2024, she competed in the twelfth season of The Masked Singer as Strawberry Shortcake, finishing in third place. Also, it was announced that she joined the cast for the fourth season of The White Lotus.

AJ is the younger sister of actress and musician Aly Michalka, with whom she shares her long-running music career. Her parents experienced a divorce during her youth.
In her personal life, she dated actor and musician Joe Jonas in 2006 and later entered a relationship with actor Josh Pence starting in August 2017.
