Early life and education
Anna Chlumsky was born on December 3, 1980, in Chicago, Illinois. Her mother worked as a singer, actress, and flight attendant, while her father was employed as a chef and saxophonist. She grew up in a Catholic household and attended Grace Lutheran School in River Forest before graduating from Walther Lutheran High School in Melrose Park.
Following her early acting success, she enrolled at the University of Chicago. She completed her undergraduate studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies in 2002. Before returning to the entertainment industry, she worked briefly in publishing as a fact-checker and an editorial assistant.
Early acting career
Anna entered the entertainment industry at a young age, appearing in a modeling campaign alongside her mother. She made her film debut with a small part in the 1989 comedy Uncle Buck. Her breakthrough arrived when she secured the lead role of Vada Sultenfuss in the 1991 film My Girl, a part she reprised in the 1994 sequel My Girl 2.
During the 1990s, she appeared in several additional feature films. Her credits from this decade include Trading Mom with Sissy Spacek and Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain alongside Christina Ricci. In 2009, Anna appeared in Armando Iannucci's satirical film In the Loop as a State Department assistant. Her collaboration with Iannucci continued when she was cast as Amy Brookheimer in the HBO political comedy series Veep. She portrayed the ambitious aide from 2012 through 2019, earning six nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Beyond her signature television work, she took on roles in various other programs and stage productions. She appeared on Broadway in You Can't Take It with You and Living on Love. Her later television credits include recurring parts in Hannibal, Halt and Catch Fire, and the Netflix limited drama series Inventing Anna, as well as voice work for the Rugrats revival.
Personal life
Anna met Shaun So while they were both students at the University of Chicago in 2000. Shaun served as a member of the Army Reserve and completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan. The couple announced their engagement in October 2007 and married in Brooklyn on March 8, 2008.
She and her husband share two daughters, who were born in July 2013 and August 2016 respectively. She continues to reside and work in the United States while maintaining her acting career across television, film, and theater.
