Early life and real name
Aymeric Jean Louis Gérard Alphonse Laporte was born on May 27, 1994, in Agen, France. He comes from Agen, where he began his football development at the local football academy after starting to play sports at the age of five. His great-grandparents provided him with Basque descent roots which later tied into his football career.
In 2009, he was scouted and invited to join Athletic Bilbao. Because he was legally too young to play football in another country at the time, he spent a season playing with Bayonne before moving to Bilbao formally in 2010 to join the youth setup at Lezama.
Career highlights
Aymeric Laporte made his senior debut for Athletic Bilbao in November 2012 under manager Marcelo Bielsa during a UEFA Europa League match against Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona. He quickly became a regular starter for the team, scoring his first professional goal against Getafe in October 2013 and later being voted into the La Liga Team of the Year.
In January 2018, he transferred to Manchester City for a reported fee of £57 million. During his time with the English club, he won multiple titles, including being part of the squad that achieved a domestic treble in 2019 and a continental treble in 2023. He later moved to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia before returning to Athletic Bilbao in September 2025.
International career
At the youth level, Aymeric Laporte represented France across various age groups from under-17 to under-21, serving as captain for each team and reaching the final of the 2013 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. Although he received senior call-ups for France, he remained uncapped at that level.
After receiving Spanish citizenship in May 2021, he switched his national association to Spain. He went on to represent Spain at UEFA Euro 2020, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Euro 2024, and the 2026 World Cup, winning both the 2024 and 2026 tournaments.
