Barry began filming recipe videos in 2010 from his home in Weston-super-Mare. He was a self-taught cook who watched Jamie Oliver on television. In 2013, Jamie Oliver discovered him online and signed him to a YouTube channel. This led to more media attention for Barry Lewis. He used these videos to share his learning process with the world.
Early career and YouTube channel
He started the My Virgin Kitchen channel to help himself learn to cook. At that time, Barry worked as a quantity surveyor for Wates Group. He made videos in the evenings to build his confidence. The channel name came from his habit of cooking recipes for the first time.
Barry Lewis eventually took a sabbatical from his job in 2013 to pursue cooking as a career. He uploaded videos of simple meals and cooking with children.
