Early life and education
Bethany Joy Lenz was born in Hollywood, United States. She attended Eastern Christian High School, which is part of the Eastern Christian School Association. During her high school years, she began to pursue acting opportunities.
While on a trip to Los Angeles, she secured her first professional work in a commercial for dolls featured in the teen drama Swans Crossing. She continued to build her resume by appearing in advertisements for brands like Eggo Waffles and Dr Pepper. By her second year of high school, she landed a role in the film Thinner.
Acting career highlights
Bethany Joy Lenz appeared in the daytime soap opera Guiding Light between 1998 and 2000. She initially played a character named Reva Shayne for nine episodes before the production recast her as Michelle Bauer Santos. During this period, she also performed in a New York cabaret and appeared in the television movie Mary and Rhoda. After her contract with Guiding Light ended, she relocated from New York City to Los Angeles to continue her acting work.
In 2003, she joined the cast of the television series One Tree Hill. She played Haley James Scott, a central character who eventually marries the character Nathan Scott. The show aired for nine seasons, concluding in 2012. During her time on the series, she also made her directorial debut by helming several episodes starting in the sixth season. She turned down a role in a Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast due to scheduling conflicts with her filming duties.
Music career
Lenz is a singer, composer, and recording artist who plays guitar and piano. She released her first independent album, Preincarnate, in 2002. While filming One Tree Hill, she continued to record music. In 2005, she released a duet titled When the Stars Go Blue with co-star Tyler Hilton, which appeared on the Billboard Pop 100 chart. She also debuted her second record, Come On Home, during a 25-city tour.
She signed with Sony Epic Records in 2006 but left the label later that year. She subsequently signed with the independent label Hillasterion. In 2008, she formed a band called Everly with Amber Sweeney. The duo performed for military personnel during a USO event before disbanding in 2012. Following the split, she continued to perform as a solo artist, releasing material such as the CD Then Slowly Grows.
