Early life and education
Betty Buckley was born on July 3, 1947, in Big Spring, Texas. As a child, she saw a theatrical production at Fort Worth's Casa Mañana and decided to pursue a career in musical theater. Her mother supported these artistic interests and arranged dance lessons for her, while her father opposed a profession in show business.
She attended Arlington Heights High School and secured her first professional role at age fifteen in a production of Gypsy. She graduated from high school early and enrolled at Texas Christian University. During her college years, she won the Miss Fort Worth title in 1966 and worked as a journalist at the Fort Worth Press before earning her Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1968.
Stage career and Broadway
Betty Buckley made her Broadway debut in the original production of the musical 1776 in 1969. New York magazine later referred to her as The Voice of Broadway for her powerful vocal performances and theatrical presence.
She achieved major acclaim in 1982 when she starred as Grizabella in the original Broadway production of Cats, performing the signature song Memory. For this famous role, she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She later appeared in London and New York productions of Sunset Boulevard and starred in the national tour of Hello, Dolly.
Film and television work
Betty Buckley expanded her career into television by starring in the popular dramedy series Eight Is Enough from 1977 to 1981. She joined the cast during its second season as Sandra Sue Abbott, becoming the stepmother to the family at the center of the show.
On the big screen, she played the gym teacher Miss Collins in the horror film Carrie in 1976 and later appeared in the musical version on stage playing a different role. Her extensive filmography also includes performances in Tender Mercies, Frantic, The Happening, and M. Night Shyamalan's Split.
